The 705 is a lovely object to caress. It’s the size of a paperback book and fits comfortably into your hands. In fact, it took a considerable effort on the part of Archos to pry the 705 out of my gripped fists.

When it comes out of its box, the first thing you see is this gorgeous 7 inch screen. The images were crisp although the touch-screen element was a little flaky in some circumstances – maybe it was my sweaty fingers?

The 705 comes in two sizes: with an 80GB or 160GB hard drive. Archos reckons you can fit up to 200 hour and a half long movies recorded at near DVD quality on the larger of the two or, alternatively, a ridiculous 95,000 audio tracks.

I was already much taken by this personal media player’s predecessor the 704 but they have tweaked the operating system and made browsing on the built-in Opera browser much more enjoyable.

The 705 is also robust – an essential point if you’re lugging it around on your travels – although I suspect that the screen may suffer the odd scratch with long-term use.

The wi-fi connectivity means you can also use the 705 to stream content from your laptop or PC. When I turned the 705 on, my PC immediately recognised its presence and asked if I wanted to share my music. I was streaming tracks from iTunes moments later. This means that it’s good as a wireless sound system for the home as well as a nifty gadget for a traveller.

If that wasn’t enough, for an extra fifty quid or so you can buy a TV dock, allowing you to record from the TV directly onto the device. Record a few episodes of Lost, rip a movie or two and a selection of your favourite tunes and you’re ready for the road.

The spec

7” TFT touch-screen (800x480), 80/160GB hard drive, USB 2.0, 802.11g wi-fi, size 182 x 128 x 20 mm, weight 630g. Playback time 5.5 hours for video, 25 hours for audio.

The hype

They say: “See the big picture.”

The reality

We say: “Watching video clips on that lovely 7 inch screen beats straining your eyes over an iPod Touch any day.”

The bottom line

£362.11 for the 160GB model from Amazon

The verdict

It’s got the looks, a screen the size of Norway, wi-fi and a huge hard drive under the bonnet. What’s not to like? Apart from the touchiness of the touch-screen perhaps.

The roadwarrior rating

9 out of 10
