Apple has addressed some of the security and connectivity concerns that had prevented the iPhone¡¯s adoption by corporate users. But with capital markets firms already exploring applications that can be easily implemented on BlackBerrys, will the iPhone be able to catch up?

Apple recently announced that it now is targeting business customers with its iPhone. To make the device more appealing to enterprise users, the Cupertino, Calif.-based company has updated the iPhone's software to provide improved security and integration of e-mail, calendars and contact lists.

In addition, Apple also is allowing developers some access to the closed device through a fee-based iPhone developer program and tool kit, known as iPhone SDK. Until now, developers of third-party applications were able to create only Web-based applications for the iPhone, using Safari, Apple's Web browser, and common Web-development standards, such as Ajax. With iPhone SDK, Apple is providing developers with the same application programming interfaces and tools that Apple engineers use to create native applications for the iPhone.

To further entice corporate users, Apple's new iPhone Enterprise Beta Program will allow participating IT departments to try iPhone 2.0 software before its general release. Companies selected by Apple to participate in the program can test new enterprise features in their corporate environments and provide Apple with feedback.

Apple's announcements were well received by the press. But is Wall Street really ready to swap its BlackBerrys and Treos for the decidedly more colorful -- and some say more stylish -- iPhone?

"It's a great announcement," says Todd Christy, cofounder and CTO of Pyxis Mobile, which provides mobile applications for financial institutions, pointing to Apple's success so far in the marketplace. By specifically targeting enterprise users, Apple can "now extend the power they've brought to this very elegant device," he adds.

In a March 6 presentation, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that in the eight months since its release, the iPhone had captured 28 percent of the smart phone market, second only to RIM, the maker of the BlackBerry, which owns a 41 percent market share.
