New way: Getting on an iPod commercial |

That's because breaking a band through radio play is no longer the primary option for major labels in this age of soccer moms who listen to Minor Threat and twelve year olds who can't get enough Charlie Patton.
One of the biggest breaks a band can catch nowadays is the prized slot on an Apple commercial.
Originally Apple was content to borrow cred from established artists like U2 or Eminem in their iPod commercials, but once the iPod became the undisputed mp3 player of choice, they branched out into lesser known acts.
The folks in charge of marketing in Cupertino have had the good taste to pair their distinctive ads with catchy, hook-filled songs that immediately weld their melody to your brain.
The Fratellis were receiving critical acclaim in Europe before "Flathead" was featured, but once their iPod ad hit they were snapped up by Interscope.
Feist wasn't likely to be playing Saturday Night Live prior to Apple turning "1,2,3,4" into their nano theme song.
Apple is now looking to press their advantage with their "Next Big Thing" offerings, where they present breaking artists' albums for rates as low as $5.99.
Considering Apple just surpassed Wal-Mart to become the top music retailer in the U.S., bands might be better off putting that intern on the guest list than a radio DJ.

"Moon Safari - 10th Anniversary Edition"
This is how re-issues should be done. Take a unimpeachable classic, pair it with a bonus disc of remixes, rarities and live performances and a DVD that contains a documentary on the band as well as videos and other goodies.
The documentary is of special interest (directed by Mike Mills of Thumbsucker fame), which presents surprisingly compelling live footage alongside revealing road vignettes, giving you a peek into the hearts of the two hopeless French romantics who turned us all on to an otherworldly pocket of space where lost FM transmissions and lonely elevator music pine for you.

"Walk It Off"
The debut by this scrappy Minneapolis foursome left scorch marks across many a critic's best of 2006 list -- mine included.
Their follow-up hews closely to their strengths -- you won't have to wait until track four to hear their yelped vocals, spastic organs and distorted fuzz blasts -- while introducing a new, pensive side to their music.
Perhaps it was the years of touring or fade of the afterglow that accompanied the rapid rush of their wildest dreams coming true, but either way life has thrown a couple knuckleballs their way, and we're the better for it.
