Featuring Dolby Digital and DTS output, the device can be mounted in any one of five adjustable positions so it will fit anywhere in your car's trunk. It connects to Alpine's proprietary Ai-NET car multimedia system for easy connectivity, but it can also operate as a stand-alone unit, sending signals to your monitor or receiver via RCA output.
While it may have limited appeal during day-to-day driving, it is sure to help pacify the little ones while on those long road trips.
A stereo for the misshapen: While it may seem novel when your new car arrives with an irregularly shaped factory stereo, it is also limiting when it comes time to replace it. Thus, Toyota Camry owners should rejoice at Signature's new TCR-07C, an all-in-one entertainment system that replaces the misshapen factory stereo with a device that has everything one can ask for in an aftermarket offering.
Featuring Bluetooth capability, iPod control, DVD and CD MP3 and WMA compatibility, this puppy arrives with a seven-inch touch screen, navigation capability for Canada and the United States and an audio/video input so you can connect gaming systems, video cameras and a whole lot of other multimedia sources.
What blows my mind is that this high-end product is manufactured by Valor, which has made its name in these pages with low-priced alternatives to higher-tiered offerings from leading stereo manufacturers. This product, priced accordingly, may service only the narrowest slice of CARgo readers, but it will serve them exceedingly well.
GPS of the week: Readers often e-mail me asking which GPS system they should buy. My response generally depends upon the week they ask. Every time I'm about to declare a market leader, a new system is introduced that gives me pause.
While I am not about to anoint Magellan's RoadMate 1212 as the best new GPS unit - too many great offerings from TomTom, Sony and Garmin make this an impossibility - this device is certainly one sweet, well-priced alternative.
Featuring a 3.5-inch touch screen, North American map data, six million points of interest and text-to-speech voice prompts that actually say road names, the device will not just articulate a shopping mall up ahead, it will even isolate some of the stores that are located inside it.
This unit may be too economical in price and features to be considered my favourite GPS of the year, but I have no problem declaring it the best of the week. |
